Inspiration Dilemma

Journal Entry: Wed Mar 26, 2008, 5:35 AM
  • Mood: Psychotic
  • Listening to: Tool - Ænima; Ensiferium; Hannah Montana
  • Reading: The Thing On The Doorstep
  • Watching: Shaba Oonts
  • Playing: UT3, Half-Life 2.whatever else I get time for
  • Eating: Some strange stuff I concocted last night
  • Drinking: Cappucino Blast (Ooooooohyeeeeah)
Hey all - this could very well be my shortest journal ever but I really need to ask something of you.

Let me cut to the chase - I'm thinking of having a nose job done, and seeing how all the big artists on DA get tons of cash when they have a call to arms, I thought I'd try my luck. I'm just really not happy with the kink I have on my nose and I woke up this morning with a need to change it. So what do you think?

I'll tell you what I think...I'm getting more kicks than that obligatory coke can lying on the street with all that stuff I said above - I was totally kidding. I love my nose.

What I really meant to say is that I think I've hit a creative block. With alot of my time already being used for other responsibilities, the time I DO have to draw I sit and smile at my blank piece of paper. Then, when I do touch said paper with pencil - I end up not being happy with what I've sketched, which in turn seems to makes me more despondant.
SO - who better to ask then my fellow artists on DeviantArt? The ones who fill me with envy when they constantly seem to be able cram my Deviation Notice box full of tasty new art; the ones who always manage to get away with colouring or drawing stuff in matters of hours; you buggers who just seem to never have inspirational issues. C'mon - you must get them too.

Please - I need any tips or suggestions that you guys follow whenever you're in a creativity rut...I know artists and writer's blocks are just something people get, but now I need to find ways to speed up myself getting over it. Should I be doing some loose sketches, still lifes or portraits? Would perhaps doodling when I work help? Maybe I should change what music I listen to, or stop it totally? Any ideas you guys provide would be well appreciated.

Gah, its like I've got a tsunami of creative juices ready to spill forth and drown my paper, but theres this miniscule CORK stopping it from being unleashed. Dammit, what a bitch.

In other news - I need to make myself a new avatar...got pointed out to me by ~hackmachine that my current avatar can create false impressions

You're living in a dream. Everyone gets creative blocks. Everyone. If they're saying they're not, they're lying.

Regarding how to remove a creative block, this is something that's been discussed by artists around the web for years. There's no clear solution for it and it's pretty much an individual thing. Some people (like me) get more creative after a short pause in drawing, some use music, some use reference pictures for inspiration, some use other artists' work for inspiration, some don't look on ANY art for a while... The list goes on and on.

I would suggest trying to draw quick crap. A lot of crap. You'll be surprised how much of it would turn up to be pretty good and maybe you'll use it as reference for a complete drawing.

Yeh, I know its something that artists just have - theres no way avoiding it...I'm just willing to try out any different techniques to assist me getting over this block :D
Thanks for the tip man - I recently was given this awesome A5 sketchpad that should help alot with what you suggested...the fact that I can take it around with me everywhere is a big plus.

Glad, you like you nose, for a moment i thought you were serious.

I have found that if i don't want to draw a pic and i try it usually doesn't work or its not as good as it could be. So ask yourself if you really feel like drawing what you have set out to draw. When i decide I dont feel like drawing the pic (or I get too fed up trying)I tend to put the pic aside and do something else (comic toning or inking, doodeling, different pic idea, actual work...)one can always go back to it later.
Maybe starting a project or joining a group such as the SDL here on d art, could give you something to channel your (as you call it :P) tsunami of creative juices.
Having more than one project running at the same time is a good thing as well case if you get fed up or hit a block on the one you can jump to the other.
You could also try changing the theme of your work or the medium
u use (pen, pencil, paint...)
Maybe try changing the music you listen to. Or play no music at all.
Thats all i can think of at the moment.

Oh and why can your current avatar create false impressions?

Draw like whatever comes to your mind. Or whatever does't. I like to draw weird faces but I almost never think of what I draw before actually doing it. Kind of a mind release.

here, smoke this.

kidding, kidding. Well, sort of. See when this happens to me, the best thing to do is to get the hell away from my drawing board, hang out with some real people, and blow off steam.

The more time spent staring at dead paper the harder its going to be to draw, because you're pushing so damn hard.

Haha dude - I laughed hard :lmao:
What you say rings with truth - I spent one day this long weekend visiting my friend and helping her dad out at his open day, and I felt refreshed....for those hours I wasn't concerned about art or doing any of it that day and it made me feel good....thinking back now, I remember being somewhat inspired driving back from there.

So in truth, I should stop trying to push against this block, and just let it slide past...sounds good. Thanks man

[link] Or, try and redo something old to see how your style has changed. That's what I'm doing at the moment. It's gonna be kickin' ;)

Oh crap - nice link! I cant begin to imagine how many times one cool word can set me off like that. In fact, its what I've started on recently...working on an A-Z where I got "Amphibious" for A, so I've got something going with that (think lobsters ;). Redoing something old has also been on my cards - I wanted to update the rest of my Horsemen to the level of where my latest Pestilence was (or better). Thanks for the suggestions Pyp

Weird faces work for me too most of the time, and on a good day, tend to set me off into drawing a complete picture revolving around said face.
I think what may be blocking me is the fact that I think too much about my piece. I try to figure out just why I'm drawing it and what goal will be achieved by drawing it. Once I learn to just draw occasionally with minimal contemplation, I may get over this :D
