Two images in a row eh? Yes, this is still me - I haven't been possessed by something else
This is the fruits of my attempts at trying new colouring technique - one that works with the colour of an image as a whole unlike each segment and the light and dark that would belong to them (eg. a character's jacket base colour, and then it's shadow and light colours). So in this case, I slapped a gradient of two similar value colours first, top to bottom. Then worked the depths and lights in with various blending modes - namely Screen and Multiply, whilst still adhering to colour choice.
It was tricky ground to step on, since as you know, I'm not so experienced with digital techniques compared to traditional ones. I did find that the piece itself came out better then I was hoping for, and that really made my day. It didn't even take as long as it normally does.
The piece itself was based on a concept sketch I did last year but did not scan so well. When I finally got my own scanner, I didn't like the way the piece looked, so I put it on my list to redo. When I did redo the character, I was reading an article in ImagineFX magazine about colour - so I thought about colouring this character.
This Crusader is a Minion for Famine. I tried to incorporate its otherworldly body with heavy yet more decorative (curvy) technology.
Voidstriders (ofcourse, they don't refer to themselves as such) are a nomadic alien race - small in number yet vast in knowledge. They have witnessed galaxies dying, planets being born, civilizations gripped in war, and have recorded such in their vast databanks. Eternal watchers, they weigh importance on actions depending on the amount of wisdom and experience they may gain from it.
They have little to no need for material things, and thus have evolved to have no need for food or water - Their bodies ascending to a state hovering between spiritual and physical, drawing sustinance from essences surrounding them, and being able to tap into the mystical and unseen arcane power of space.
Intrigued by the techno-religion revolving around Famine's appearance, the Voidstriders decend to Earth...
They find something to worship that befits their goals; new experiences and possibly a permanent home. Famine finds in them a vast array of alien technology; users of debilitating space-sorcery; and willing (or naive - you decide) followers to his cause.
Famine's got his Masks as basic ranged units - the Crusader is one above them being quicker medium ranged units with added benefits.
KNOWN ISSUES:
1. First time I've really done this, so the lines aren't so hot - keeping in mind for next piece that I will colour.
2. Aaaargh! I've uploaded the wrong final jpeg! There are some small things that I cleaned up in the final piece, but they are evident in this one. Some colouring is visible past the lines - not a mistake...I will upload the correct one tomorrow.
Kinda reminds me of an Protos from star craft.
Would you describe this character as good, evil or neutral? have you ever considered doing a graphic novel or something? You seem to have a whole realm thought out which could make a interesting story.
Thanks alot man ...I'll take a look at my progress PSD's and I'll see if its possible - I'm not really sure, because once I'm happy with something, I flatten it right away to avoid second guessing and large file sizes.

Yeah- my bro also likened them to the Protoss, but no matter...alot of things have the super advanced alien race that has "ascended" as such.
The race is more neutral but in a cold, selfish sort of way. They know what they want, they get what they want, and if lives are to be lost in the process - then it was all in the name of knowledge...but it can also work the other way as well. Because of their age and spirtuality, they are often condescending towards other species and civilizations.
Graphic novel is a great idea! If only I had the time...it was on the cards at one stage, but work happened

You been talking about your alternate colouring experiments for so long and finally...here it is!
Great job man!
That's one ugly looking alien. I don't even want to know what that pointy fingers are for
That's an interesting approach to colouring. Does this only work on similar colour pics, i'm just wondering what will happen if you have widely differing colours.
Yeah- for TOO long! Since my pc was buggered, I got stuck behind on this...I would have even finished it sooner
Thanks alot for the comment dude! It's not ugly - it just doesn't care about its appearance The pointy fingers are for when they actually need to work on intricate tech, or for probing goodness.
The whole issue with the colour was that it worked out because the colours were complimentary. If you have to implement this technique, choosing two colours that are opposite each other on the colour wheel is a great help.
So say, you want to use oranges...then the other colour should be blues (or around that area...purples, indigos). Thats why Kim chose red to compliment her green in her latest DP pic. Also, the colours should be of a similar value and not too bright - very neutral as you can spice it all up later.
However, there are a quite a bunch of different colour combos out there. Theres the one where you can take a section of the colour wheel - reds, oranges and yellows and create a piece with those...and then you could throw in a little touch of green to make it more dramatic and contrasting.
Ultimately, I find it works easier to follow a technique loosely and then alter it to look better in your own eyes. Its was just different to try colour something in its unity, rather than colour things separately like my Vamp pieces.
Also! When I'm totally satisfied with a section, I flatten it. It keeps me from second guessing myself and it helps keep everything running smoothly. Keeping multiple psd's also help.

A very interesting design, and the color is quite nice. Perhaps add a bit more color or shadow to the cloth, though? It's a bit hard to distinguish from the metal. Can't think of anything else, though!

The shading on the cloth here is very well done. I also liek the gold on the blue and your lighting looks amazing. I struggle with highlights so respect! It looks liek something from an Isaac Asimov cover

Since it doesn't care about it's appearance than why does it use a decorative technology?
I really like the design of it, though.
If I had to criticize something (please don't take offence), I think those ...err... afterburners it uses to levitate seem to be rather naive (or perharps cynical) solution, especially when contrasted with the mysterious sphere it holds in the right hand.
