Tide Eater Concept by radiationboyy Tide Eater Concept by radiationboyy
Just a concept I was throwing around in my head, trying to exercise my ability to design vehicles and creatures at the same time.
A bit stuck for time so no long descriptions about this one at the moment, but essentially its a pirate cult's means of finally being able to break through the more protected (and therefore, higher loot quantity) towns that had previously been able to deter these scrappy invaders with little concern or effort. Until now...

Drawing inspiration from the Tide Eater's symbiotic relationship with a local crab species, where the crabs would burrow into the shells to find greater protection, safe haven to spawn, whilst in turn aiding the Tide Eater by feeding on the parasitic organisms that reside within the shell. Over time, the Tide Eater's shells began to enlarge and accomodate these crabs, who would seem to create caverns whilst at the same time, curiously causing no pain to the tortoise.
The cult, who had previously used the Tide Eaters as simple hauling power, began to experiment by cutting away fragments of the shell and carving through the areas which were once inhabited by the crabs, in order to accomodate a human shape. The tests proved fruitful and very soon afterwards, the brute force stopping power and easily disciplined turtles had the potential to become armoured land transport vessels - and double as a determined battering ram against the wealthy merchant towns walls. Once cracking open the defensive barriers, the soldiers paled in comparison to the eager and experienced pirates who would emerge, grinning, from the tortoise's shell.

Apart from evident amounts of armour plating reinforcement and some bulldozing headgear, I equipped the Tide Eater APC with two gun posts for self defence, as well as multiple peek holes for observation and/or firing from. I threw in a rudimentary smoke dispenser, which is operated with the burning with herbs that create a thick white plume of smoke, but also acts as an irritant - and if anything, looks more intimidating to rich people who are about to get pillaged.

Ugh, so much for me not talking so much! Enjoy!

"And thanks to KIM for suggesting I do some vehicle work!"

Aw, Matt, you don't have to thank me ;)

It's INSANELY good, btw! You really have outdone yourself :) If you don't get a job with this, I don't know what will :/

Thanks alot for the comment Kim, really glad you can see progress :) If this doesn't get me a job, its because I'm a foreigner or something - I'm used to that excuse by now atleast :/

I like the little man for scale next to the creatures adds authority! Hmm, I could imagine going up against something like this in shadow of the colossus!

Oh yeahs, I had to put in some kinda comparison just for scale purposes - I'm toying with the idea of designing out that guy properly just for fun :D I never played much SotC, I only got so far as falling into a lake and not knowing wtf to do :(

Cool pick and description. :3
I like the way you thought out how everything works. My only crit is that the backpacks attached on the side of the Tide Eater is huge when compared to the guy next to it. There is nothing really wrong, they could work it but it just looks a bit out of place. I think its just me but I keep thinking of those backpacks for horses exept its on a huge creature. :P

Keep up the great pics.

Ah thanks alot man! Seriously :D Agreed, the backpacks are bigger, I just included them as a means of storage on the turtle rather than something the guy would detach and carry. I think the problem is perhaps that they look like conventional backpacks :D Yep, just imagine a turtle when you see a pack horse and everything will make sense :D

I love this so bad you have no idea.

Latin names are capitalised first then every other word is lower case, ie Python molorus or Python reticulatus.

Ah! Thank you muchly for the Latin correction (an artist can try pretend they know what they're talking about and occasionally slip up ;P ) and thanks even more for the compliment man!

Personally, whilst I like turtles, I'm all for the crab I'm designing next :eyes: chitinous exoskeletons give me that warm feeling.

Hey, thanks alot for the comment man! It started as a little sketch, and I painted it up on PS, then copied it and painted all the armour and gimmicks on - so for short answer, its digital

I've always loved your sketches. This is just another example of your very good skills with the graphite. ^^ awesome work buddy. Question: I see the Peek-holes are on the Shell off the creature itself. Is that right? I read your discription, but not sure I interpreted it correctly.

Aw hay man, thanks so much for the compliment! I'll be honest though, this is my attempt at digitally trying to impersonate a sketch, cos I painted this up in PS :D Good to know that its that convincing :D
Hmmm *reads description* Yep, the peek holes are essentially parts of the shell cut out and armour reinforced, to offer more protection and to ensure that the fracture in the shell doesn't enlarge
